Put Your Best Face Forward! Passport Photo DOs and DON’Ts

DO:

  1. Dress for the journey. Think about what you’d wear on a travel day. Are you a business-class traveler or more of a comfy-tourist type? Either way, dress accordingly.
  2. Opt for solid, dark colors with sleeves. You want to stand out from the background, not blend into it. Keep your style, but avoid overly loud or distracting patterns. If you love white tops, layer them under a jacket or blazer. Hoodies, scarves, and turtlenecks? Leave them at home.
  3. Show those ears! Some countries are now requesting visible ears. Germany and Australia are big on this, so keep it in mind if you’re heading there. Better safe than sorry!
  4. Remove glasses. If it’s not a medical necessity, ditch them. Glasses can cause shadows and glare, which might lead to rejection. If you must wear them for medical reasons, make sure it’s noted in your application and double-check for glare before leaving the studio.
  5. Keep your jewelry simple. No bling, no dangling earrings, no glittery necklaces. Think minimalistic elegance.
  6. Wear your hair down or in a low style. This makes cropping the photo easier and ensures your hair doesn’t get cut off in the final print.

DON’T:

  1. No head coverings, unless for religious purposes. If you do wear one, ensure it doesn’t cast shadows or obscure facial features. A note will be required in your application.
  2. Skip the heavy makeup. Believe it or not, one embassy rejected a photo because the client’s makeup looked too much “like a filter.” Stick to neutral, natural tones. A few makeup tips:
    • Avoid glossy lips—they reflect light. Matte lipstick is your friend!
    • Skip the highlighter and bronzer—they can create unnatural skin tone contrasts.
    • Avoid fake lashes that obscure your eyes.
    • Keep contouring subtle and skin-tone appropriate.
  3. No uniforms! We love and support our patriots fighting for freedom , but leave them at home this time. Thank you for your service!
  4. Watch out for shine. No one wants a shiny passport photo! Bring blotting tissues and give your face a quick touch-up before your photo.
  5. Don’t forget a hairbrush! Stray hairs casting shadows can be a dealbreaker. Bring some bobby pins if needed.
