crucial. A properly taken passport photo ensures your application is processed smoothly without

unnecessary delays. Here’s everything you need to know about U.S. passport photo specifications and

citizenship documentation.


S. Passport Photo Specifications

When submitting a passport application, you must provide a photo that meets the following official

requirements:

  • The photo must be 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) in size.
  • The head must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (25–35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
  • The photo should have a white or off-white background with no patterns or shadows.
  • The image must be clear, in color, and printed on high-quality photo paper.
  • Digital photos should be high resolution (minimum 600 x 600 pixels, maximum 1200 x 1200 pixels).
  • Clothing: Wear everyday attire. Uniforms, camouflage, or costumes are not permitted.
  • Glasses: Must be removed unless required for medical reasons (a doctor’s note is needed).
  • Hats and Head Coverings: Not allowed except for religious or medical reasons (must submit a signed statement justifying the exception).
  • Facial Expression: A neutral expression with both eyes open is preferred. Smiling is acceptable but should be natural and not exaggerated.
  • The photo must be properly exposed with no shadows, glare, or overexposure.
  • It should not be altered or retouched in any way that changes appearance.
  • The image should be taken within the last six months to reflect your current look.

  • You can wear jewelry and keep on your facial piercings as long as they do not hide your face.
